Aimed at revitalising the hospitality industry which has been hit by the recent landslides, Wayanad Tourism Organization (WTO) has proposed a comprehensive action plan to revive and restore the reputation of the hill district as a premier tourist destination.
Soorajith Radhakrishnan, the new incumbent secretary of WTO said that the 12th edition of monsoon carnival – Splash 2025 – will be held from July 11 to 14. The idea is to revitalize the hospitality industry and restore tourist confidence; showcase Wayanad’s unique attractions and experiences; foster collaboration among stakeholders to promote sustainable tourism practices.
The event will showcase the unique Wayanad experience, highlighting its natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality, “We will be soon organising a B2B meet, bringing together stakeholders from the tourism industry, government agencies, and local businesses to showcase the vibrant culture of the district, art and adventure activities”, he said.
It is pointed out that the recent landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala have severely impacted the hospitality industry, which employs over 25 per cent of the district’s population. The tourism initiatives in the district which was recouped after Covid witnessed a 20 per cent drop after the landslides. “We are inviting all stakeholders including hoteliers, tour operators, local businesses, and government agencies to join hands in reviving the hospitality industry”, he said.
Wayanad, despite these challenges, remains a safe and welcoming destination for tourists. The local authorities and tourism stakeholders are working together to ensure the safety and security of visitors, while also promoting sustainable tourism practices, he added.
However, there is a pressing need to develop responsible tourism practices. This includes promoting eco-friendly accommodations, reducing waste and carbon footprint, and supporting local communities and conservation efforts. By adopting responsible tourism practices, visitors can contribute to the conservation of Wayanad, its natural beauty and cultural heritage, he said.
