Kothagudem: Timely response from two journalists and a passerby has saved the life of a man who attempted to end his life by jumping into river Godavari at Bhadrachalam on Sunday.
It was said that the journalists, Mohammed Abdul Ghani and Shaik Jakir of Burgampahad while travelling over the bridge spotted a man sitting on the railing of the bridge. Sensing something was wrong with the person they enquired him why he was sitting on the bridge railing and he responded saying he wanted to end his life.
Then the journalists appealed to the man to get down and not to take any extreme step, but he did not respond and told the duo not to come close to him. However, the journalists kept on asking him loudly to get down to keep him engaged in conversation and to convince him to quit his suicide attempt, during that time one of the friends of Ghani was passing by on a motorbike on the bridge.
On seeing the scene, Ghani’s friend grasped the gravity of the situation, stopped his vehicle; quickly approached the man from behind; got hold of him. He then pulled the man down from the railing; then the journalists ran towards him and grabbed the man.
Later the man identified himself as Anand of AMC Colony in Bhadrachalam town. He said he was facing financial and family problems, hence wanted to end his life. On receiving information from the journalists, police and Anand’s family members reached the spot and took him with them.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Ghani said that even though he and his friend were trying to stop Anand from jumping into the river, none of the passersby cared to stop or to help them to rescue him. It was the quick action of his childhood friend that saved Anand, he said.
