The US on Tuesday cautioned the Indian and international students to ensure they adhere to terms of their visa to avoid cancellation and not skip classes or drop out without intimation to their institutions. This comes amidst growing uncertainty that international students are a facing at a time when the Trump government has been cracking down on illegal immigrants as well foreign nationals.

In a post on X, the US Embassy in India stated, “If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future US visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues.”

Key deportation drives

This comes at a time when the US government has been carrying out major deportation drives targeting students and immigrants. Earlier this month, the Embassy had also in its post on X warned that if someone remains in the US beyond the authorised period of stay, they could face deportation as well as a permanent ban on travelling to the US in the future.

Recently, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement had issued warnings to international students on Optional Practical Training (OPT) visas, stating that failure to report employment within 90 days of starting OPT could lead to termination of their legal status and face potential deportation. Such students need to maintain their legal status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System , according to international reports.

As of April, about 682 Indian nationals have been deported from the US in 2025.

Recently, the Trump government barred Harvard University from enrolling international students. However, a federal judge granted temporary injunction to the University on the matter.
