UoH students continue protest, demand release of detained peers and halt to Kancha Gachibowli land auction

Hyderabad: Some University of Hyderabad (UoH) students continued to be under police detention on Monday after they were detained during protests against clearing of the forested land in Kancha Gachibowli on Sunday.

According to students, Rohit Bond, a student, who was detained by the police on Sunday was yet to be released.

Rohit’s health condition has not been good and having high BP, students said, adding that another student Erram Naveen who went to bring the detained students from Madhapur Police Station was also detained and an FIR was registered against them.

On Sunday night, 28 students were released from Madhapur Police Station after the BRS leaders staged a protest demanding immediate release of all detainees. While the BRS leaders called off the protest, students continued to protest at the university main gate demanding release of all students. They also demanded the government revoke its decision to auction 400-acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli, which according to them belongs to the university.

According to students, the 400-acres of forested land is rich in biodiversity with a huge presence of mammals, birds and medicinal and aromatic plants. They said any construction activity in the area would create ecological imbalance, destroying flora and fauna, and lung space for the city.
