The US is keeping a keen eye on the escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan with President Donald Trump calling it a “shame” and expressing hopes of it ending “very quickly”.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to the National Security Advisers (NSA) of both India and Pakistan and asked them to keep the keep lines of communication open and avoid escalation, the US Department of State said.
Meanwhile, China said that it finds India’s military operation against Pakistan regrettable and asked both countries to exercise restraint while Israel extended its support to New Delhi.
Reacting to India’s air strikes on Pakistan in the early hours of Wednesday morning targeting terrorist infrastructure, Trump said that it was expected to happen. “It is a shame. We just heard about it. I think we knew something is gonna happen based on the past. They have been fighting for a long time. They have been fighting for many many decades. And centuries if you actually think about it. I hope it ends very quickly,” Trump said from his Oval office.
India’s strike against Pakistan was in response to the terror attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.
“I am monitoring the situation between India and Pakistan closely. I echo @POTUS’s comments earlier today that this hopefully ends quickly and will continue to engage both Indian and Pakistani leadership towards a peaceful resolution,” Rubio posted on `X’.
In a statement, the US State Department noted that Rubio spoke to the national security advisors from India and Pakistan. He urged both to keep lines of communication open and avoid escalation.
India’s actions against Pakistan have been focused and precise, according to a press release from the Embassy of India, Washington DC. “They were measured, responsible and designed to be non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani civilian, economic or military targets have been hit. Only known terror camps were targeted.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson reportedly said on Wednesday that China finds India’s military operation early this morning regrettable. “We are concerned about the ongoing situation. India and Pakistan are and will always be each other’s neighbors. They’re both China’s neighbors as well. China opposes all forms of terrorism. We urge both sides to act in the larger interest of peace and stability, remain calm, exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions that may further complicate the situation,” the spokesperson said.
Israel put its weight behind India and expressed support for the strikes. “Israel supports India’s right for self defense. Terrorists should know there’s no place to hide from their heinous crimes against the innocent,” Israel’s Ambassador to India Reuven Razar posted on `X’ on Wednesday.
