Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the phone on Monday and “strongly condemned” the terror attack in Pahalgam, India, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

Putin also accepted an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the country for the annual high level summit, the Kremlin said on Monday.

“President Putin called PM Narendra Modi and strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, India. He conveyed deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives and expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism. He emphasised that the perpetrators of the heinous attack and their supporters must be brought to justice,” according to a post by MEA Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal on social media platform ‘X’ on Monday.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to further deepen the special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia. “Prime Minister Modi conveyed greetings to President Putin on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day and invited him for the Annual Summit to be held in India later in the year,” Jaiswal added.

The Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which killed 26 people, most of them tourists, is one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the country by terrorists.  India has accused Pakistan of tacitly supporting the terror groups responsible for the heinous attack in Jammu & Kashmir and called for bringing the perpetrators and supporters to justice.

The Pakistan government, however, has been steadily denying its involvement in the J&K terror strike. On Monday, the Pakistan parliament passed a resolution, condemning the Indian government’s “mala fide campaign” to  link Pakistan to the April 22 attack in Pahalgam.

Kremlin statement

“The President of Russia has once again expressed his sincere condolences over the death of Indian citizens killed in a barbaric terrorist attack committed on April 20 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Both leaders emphasised terrorism must be fought against uncompromisingly in all its forms,” said a statement issued by Kremlin.

The statement added that Putin had agreed to visit India on Modi’s invitation. “The Indian leader has confirmed his invitation for the President of Russia to visit India to hold the traditional annual bilateral summit. The invitation was graciously accepted,” it said.

India has banned import of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan in the “interest of national security and public policy”. It suspended all postal services from Pakistan and banned entry of Pakistani-flagged ships at Indian ports on Saturday. India also suspended the Indus Water Treaty for water sharing with Pakistan.
