The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for Amaravati for the first time in October 2015. However, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party government which came to power in 2019 halted the construction work with a plan to shift executive capital to Visakhapatnam with Amaravati and Kurnoll as legislative and executive capitals. The NDA government, which won the mandate in 2024, revived the single, Greenfield capital project in Amaravati.
