Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) amid continued drone incursions from Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah joined the CCS meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday –the first since the cessation of firing to assess the evolving security situation. Sources indicated that at least two dozen unarmed drones from Pakistan have been detected since yesterday evening, likely conducting surveillance.

This has been going on despite the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan reaching an agreement on Monday to refrain from firing and to consider steps for troop reduction along the border and forward locations. The specifics for the return of forces to their peacetime positions are still under discussion.

Situation in review

Army officials have maintained that post May 10 understanding for peace, there is no need to get alarmed by reports on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as adequate steps are being taken to locate these birds in this side of the border.

Meanwhile, Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, along with Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi briefed President Droupadi Murmu on Operation Sindoor, launched initially on May 7 to target 9 terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

Subsequently, the situation flared up with Pakistan retaliating and targeting military bases, civilians and infrastructure, forcing India to pound at least a dozen of the neighbouring country’s air fields, air defence systems, and logistic establishments.

“President Murmu commended the valour and the dedication of the Armed Forces that made India’s response to terrorism a sterling success,” her office said in a post on ‘X’.
