Reliance Industries and Adani group together on Friday announced ₹1.25 lakh crore investment in North Eastern States.

“Reliance has invested around ₹30,000 crore in the region in the past 40 years. In the next five years, we will more than double our investments, with our target at ₹75,000 crore,” Mukesh Ambani, Chairman & Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, said while addressing the Rising North-East Investors Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier inaugurated the summit.

Ambani also said that in addition to creating over 2.5 million direct and indirect employment opportunities. “We aspire to touch the lives of most of our 45 million sisters and brothers in North-East,” he said.

This was among the six commitments by Ambani in the North Eastern states. Another commitment concerns doubling the number of Jio subscribers, which has already covered 90 per cent of the population with over 50 lakhs of 5G subscribers. “Jio’s priority will be to bring the revolutionary power of Artificial Intelligence to all schools, hospitals, enterprises and homes. When talent meets technology and competence meets connectivity, our North-East will surge ahead,” he said.

There are plans by Reliance Retails to increase the procurement of staples, fruits, and vegetables, as well as enhance solar power generation and set up 350 integrated Compressed Biogas plants. Reliance Foundation plans to extend cancer care in the region. “We have established a 150-bed comprehensive cancer hospital in Manipur. We are collaborating with Mizoram University on the care of breast cancer using genomic data. In Guwahati, we have built an Advanced Molecular Diagnostics and Research Lab. It will be among the largest Genome Sequencing Capacities in the India. We will help transform the North-East into a healthcare hub and a research powerhouse,” Ambani said.

Noting the higher growth rates,  Ambani said: “In the near future, I can clearly see this region replicating the miracle achieved by neighbouring countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.”

Adani’s Plan

Addressing the summit, Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, said that three months ago, in Assam, his group pledged an investment of ₹50,000 crore. “I announce that the Adani Group will invest an additional ₹50,000 crore across the Northeast over the next 10 years,” he said. The group’s focus will span green energy — including smart meters, hydro, pumped storage, power transmission, roads & highways, digital infrastructure, logistics, and capacity-building through skilling and vocational training centres.

“We will invest in people. Every initiative will prioritize local jobs, local entrepreneurship, and community engagement,” he said.

Modi pledges to propel Northeast growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the government is determined to accelerate growth in the North East.

“The Northeast is witnessing unprecedented progress. We are determined to accelerate its growth story,” he said while inaugurating the two-day event, which is being attended by chief ministers of the region, union ministers, bureaucrats, and diplomats, among others.

Modi said for his government, EAST means – ‘Empower, Act, Strengthen and Transform’. “There was a time when Northeast was only called the frontier, now it is a frontrunner of growth,” he said, adding that earlier the region was synonymous with bombs, guns and blockades.
