Mobis India Limited, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor India Limited, inaugurated its EV Battery System Assembly (BSA) plant at Sriperumbudur. Spanning 8.15 acres, the plant is located adjacent to Hyundai Motor’s car manufacturing facility. Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister, TRB Rajaa, inaugurated the facility, says a release.

The plan has an initial installed capacity of 36,000 units per annum, which is designed to meet the growing demand for electric mobility. It can be scaled to a capacity of 75,000 units in the short term.

The facility will assemble high-performance battery systems for electric vehicles manufactured in India. The Hyundai CRETA Electric is the first EV to be equipped with battery packs assembled at this plant, and Mobis India is looking to support Hyundai’s strong push toward localised EV production, marking a major step in India’s electric mobility journey.

This facility strengthens Tamil Nadu’s localisation capabilities by ensuring critical EV components are made here. This project reflects Tamil Nadu’s transition to smart manufacturing and our commitment to creating high-value employment, the industries minister said.

Park Ki Chul, Managing Director, Mobis India Limited, said the investment highlights the collaboration between affiliate companies Mobis India and Hyundai Motor and their shared commitment to advancing electric mobility solutions in India. The facility will create 255 direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to the local economy.

The plant currently produces high-performance NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt) battery packs and will soon be able to support LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) battery production. The facility features fully automated assembly lines utilising robotic systems to ensure precision, consistency, and operational efficiency. The plant also embraces eco-conscious manufacturing practices, incorporating sustainable materials and processes aimed at minimising its environmental impact, the release said.
