Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) condemned the police brutality against students of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), who were protesting against razing of trees in 400 acres inside the university campus for development. They charged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy with encroaching on green spaces to promote real estate development while ignoring student concerns and environmental damage.
BRS working president KT Rama Rao questioned the government’s decision to encroach on green spaces when large tracts of land were available elsewhere. “When 14,000 acres of land in ‘Future City’ are readily available for IT parks and economic activity, why target Hyderabad’s environment and destroy the present city for future generations?” he asked.
Former Minister and MLA G Jagadish Reddy condemned the assault on the students who had fought for Telangana’s statehood.
“Congress came to power with the support of students and youth, but today, it is repaying them with cases and police batons,” he said. He stated that Revanth Reddy was trying to finish the incomplete work left by his mentor and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who gave away the lands to private entities.
He said there was a secret Congress-BJP nexus, as the Centre remains silent on the issue. “If union Minister G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay are sincere, why don’t they stop the police from entering UoH?” he asked.
Former Minister and MLA Vemula Prashanth Reddy criticised the Congress for “selling government lands to corporate giants,” under the guise of development. He warned that the Central University’s biodiversity, including rare bird species, was at risk due to the government’s actions. “Rahul Gandhi talks about protecting the Constitution – why is he silent about land sales in UoH?” he asked.
BRS MLC K Kavitha called the police action “shameful,” asserting that the university belonged to students, not land sharks.
MLC Dasoju Sravan also condemned the police force against students, stating that Revanth Reddy had unleashed police violence to facilitate a shady real estate land grab. He also raised concerns over the assault on academia, the environment, and innocent wildlife, inside the university campus.
