The Karnataka Congress on Monday deleted a controversial post on X that quoted Mahatma Gandhi’s words — “The greatest strength of humanity is peace”, following widespread backlash. The timing of the post drew sharp criticisms from the BJP, as it came shortly after the Indian armed forces launched airstrikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’. The strikes targeted nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), in retaliation for the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 tourists.

The controversy unfolded days after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah clarified his earlier remarks on war, emphasising that his statement was misinterpreted. Initially, he had suggested that “war is not needed,” which led to criticism and confusion. In his clarification, Siddaramaiah stated that he did not categorically oppose war but believed it should be considered only if inevitable, as it is not a solution.

Reacting to the Karnataka Congress’s post, BJP State President and MLA BY Vijayendra on Tuesday demanded an apology from top Congress leaders, including Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

“Karnataka Congress today tweeted calling the world’s most powerful weapon ‘peace.’ They should be ashamed. The party leadership must clarify their stand,” Vijayendra said.

Subsequently, Siddaramaiah expressed full support for Operation Sindoor, a military response to the Pahalgam attack. He praised the armed forces’ decisive action, stating that their courage reaffirms India’s stance against terrorism. He described the Pahalgam attack as not just an assault on innocent lives but also on the nation’s spirit and dreams.

BJP spokesperson Prakash told businessline, “Many Congress leaders who initially spoke against the national interest now stand exposed. They are being compelled to fall in line and support the Indian government’s action. This is a clear message to the CM and Congress ministers to not jump the gun.”
