The Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders’ Unions on Wednesday held a demonstration to seek relief against the issue of closure of factories in Tamil Nadu. It specifically aimed to draw the attention of the state and central governments to open the Sterlite copper plant to protect the welfare of workers and urged to form a tripartite committee and expert committee to remove the shortage of copper caused by the closure of the Sterlite copper plant.

The Federation in a statement noted that besides Sterlite, there is crisis in the traditional cotton mills and spinning industries and also increasing loss of employment due to the closure of information technology companies. “The government, which is supposed to improve the lives of workers across Tamil Nadu, has closed down factories relying on false rumours and misinformation, causing an irreversible socio-economic crisis for the workers. It is not the industrialists who were affected by this but the workers,” it said.

More than 25,000 people who depended on the Sterlite plant that was operating in Thoothukudi lost their livelihood and were affected. Several thousand labourers who handle cargo at the port are also affected. Especially small and micro businesses have also been affected to a great extent, it added.
