Bareilly:

A wedding in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly took an ugly turn after the groom showed up drunk and ended up garlanding the bride’s best friend. Radha Devi, the 21-year-old bride, slapped the groom, called off the wedding and left. But that was not the only drama at the incident that took place on Saturday.

It all started when the groom, Ravindra Kumar, 26, arrived late at the venue with his baraat or wedding procession. According to the FIR by the bride’s family, the groom’s family demanded additional dowry. The bride’s father said he had given Rs 2.5 lakh during the pre-wedding rituals and another Rs 2 lakh on the morning of the wedding. But this didn’t seem enough for the groom’s family.

Another version of the story is that Ravindra Kumar wanted to marry a woman of his choice.

He allegedly arrived drunk for his wedding and misbehaved with the bride’s family and relatives.

By the time of the ritual of exchanging garlands, he had been drinking with his friends for a while, alleged the FIR.

Instead of garlanding his bride, he – apparently by accident – threw it on her best friend standing next to her. A furious Radha Devi immediately slapped the groom and walked off.

A fight erupted between the two families with both sides throwing chairs at each other. Finally, the police arrived and took charge of the situation. The groom and his wedding procession were sent back.

The police detained the groom and friends and registered a case for insulting the bride’s family and “disturbing the peace”.

A case has also been registered against the groom for demanding dowry.

The groom’s friends allegedly bought illicit liquor and gave it to him. One man has been arrested for selling the liquor.
