A Delhi Police assistant sub-inspector died on Sunday, days after being stabbed multiple times by a man he nabbed for snatching a mobile phone in Mayapuri area on Wednesday.
The ASI succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in central Delhi, reported news agency PTI.
Based on a complaint by a woman that her husband’s mobile phone has been snatched and the accused has threatened them of consequences, ASI Shambhu Dayal reached the area where the complainant identified the person.
The accused, Anish, was nabbed and on the way to the police station tried to flee but failed after which he took out a knife and stabbed Dayal multiple times on his neck, chest, stomach and back, a police official said, according to PTI.
A few passersby happened to record the incident and shared it on social media. In the video posted by @UtkarshMishra_9 on the micro-blogging site Twitter, one can see the snatcher trying to flee from the clutches of the ASI but fails to do so, and starts to stab the officer.

As soon as the news reached the Mayapuri police station a staffer rushed to the spot and overpowered the snatcher. He was later placed under arrest while ASI Dayal was rushed to a hospital, reported PTI
Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Ghanshyam Bansal said ASI Dayal did not let the accused flee. He fought for his life for four days but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning.
Dayal (57), a native of Sikar district in Rajasthan, is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
