Adilabad: A 55-year-old farmer died, allegedly by suicide, as he was depressed over his inability to repay mounting debts at Varthamannur village in Bazarhatnoor mandal on Saturday.
Locals and family members said that Maila Narsaiah was found hanging from a tree in an agriculture field. He was reportedly distressed over his inability to repay his debts. It was learnt that he registered losses in cotton farming due to a dip in yield. He grew the crop by borrowing loans. The quantum of loans was yet to be ascertained.
Narsaiah is survived by his wife and three children.
Incidentally, this is the seventh case of suicide by a farmer in the district in the last couple of months. Gode Govind Rao, 45, took the drastic step by consuming pesticide at his farm. Rao grew cotton in four acres of land taken on lease from another farmer of the village by borrowing Rs 5 lakh on January 23.
Earlier, five farmers in the district died by suicide as they were disheartened by their inability to repay loans between December 1 to January 19, indicating the severity of the unprecedented agriculture crisis prevailing in the district.
