Anganwadi teacher shows the way to reach out to poor, needy

Proving that religion is no bar, Sulthana gifted ‘mangalsutra’ and toe rings to many poor Hindu brides.

Siddipet: Setting an example for others to follow, a Muslim woman, working as an anganwadi teacher, has been reaching out to needy people. Mohammad Umar Razia Sulthana Begum has been carrying out various social activities across Siddipet district for the last five years.

While Sulthana has been working as an anganwadi teacher at Indupriyal in Doulthabad mandal, her husband Umar, a mechanic by profession, has been running a garage at Pragnapur. Whenever she finds a poor family in serious need, she visits their home and presents a kit, containing groceries worth Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 cash as immediate relief.

Proving that religion is no bar, Sulthana gifted ‘puste mettelu’ (‘mangalsutra’ and toe rings) to many poor Hindu brides. Sulthana also performed a poor Muslim girl’s marriage at Dommata village by spending Rs 2.5 lakh after learning that the girl’s father, who runs a puncture shop, could not afford to perform her marriage. She even helped some poor people perform funerals of their family members.

Speaking to ‘Telangana Today’, Sulthana, who completed post-graduation in Sociology, said that she had founded SR Trust to carry out her services in a systematic way during Covid-19. Sulthana, who is also a regular blood donor, has donated blood 18 times so far. She also makes arrangements for blood donation camps organised in her locality.

She credited her entire work to her husband Umar for letting her carry out the service despite they belonging to a middle-class family. Sulthana also helps poor students get admission into social welfare residential schools besides guiding poor patients to get treatment for various ailments at RVM Medical College cum Hospital in Mulugu.
