Tamil Nadu on Friday welcomed the new electronics components manufacturing PLI scheme launched by the Centre as State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa hailed as a ‘great news’ for the State’s electronics industry.

“The PLI scheme is a strong endorsement of Tamil Nadu’s ongoing strategy to move up the electronics value chain by moving into components manufacturing, a mission we have been pursuing diligently for the last couple of years,” the minister said in a social media post. “The Union Government’s initiative further strengthens our approach and provides the much-needed boost for the sector,” he added.

Tamil Nadu’s existing electronics ecosystem and rich talent pool have already made the electronics PLI one of the most successful PLI schemes in the country, and we are confident that this components PLI will also work, he added.

Tamil Nadu, which has over 15 leading electronics manufacturers, is India’s largest exporter of electronics goods with over $13 billion in exports in FY25 (till Feb). Presence of Foxconn and companies like Tata Electronics and Pegatron starting their production in the last couple of years has helped Tamil Nadu to achieve such a performance.

‘A commendable step’

Josh Foulger, President (Electronics), Zetwerk, a Bengaluru-based contract manufacturing company, said this is a commendable step towards strengthening India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem and driving self-reliance.

“At Zetwerk, we’re excited to be part of the ESDM 2.0 journey — a half-a-trillion-dollar opportunity. We are actively engaging with partners and are open to collaborations to build a strong component ecosystem in India. With this forward-looking policy, we are confident that it will accelerate the growth of high-value electronics, increase value addition, and create opportunities for innovation and employment,” said Foulger.

What’s particularly encouraging is the focus on increasing local value addition. Strengthening domestic capabilities will not only enhance India’s competitiveness but also ensure a more resilient supply chain. It’s a positive step that will drive long-term growth and support India’s vision of becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse, he added.
