Underage driving: Hyderabad Traffic Police to cancel vehicle registration

Hyderabad: In light of the rising incidents of minors driving vehicles on city roads and causing fatal road accidents, the Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP) is launching a special enforcement drive from Saturday to curb this dangerous practice across Hyderabad. Necessary action against the violators, including cancellation of vehicle registration will also be taken-up during the course of the drive.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, underage individuals are strictly prohibited from driving vehicle. If a minor is caught driving, the vehicle owner, typically the parent or registered owner is also held accountable and faces legal consequences.


Traffic officials said as per Section 199A of the MV Act, 1988, for the offences by juveniles, fine and or imprisonment will be imposed, the vehicle registration will be cancelled for a period of 12 months. Apart from this, the juvenile will not be eligible to obtain Learner’s or Driving Licence until he attains the age of 25 years.

Joint Commissioner (Traffic), D Joel Davis requested parents and guardians not to all their minor children to drive vehicles. This special enforcement drive will involve strict legal action against violators to ensure safer roads for all.
