Hyderabad: Extending support to the Congress government’s bill to offer 42 percent reservations to BCs, AIMIM Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi demanded that eight percent reservation be extended to the BC-E category (comprising socially and educationally backward classes among Muslims) and the balance 34 percent to the A,B,C and D categories for admissions into educational institutions, besides appointments in services.
He also reminded that the Congress in its manifesto had promised to increase BC reservations in local bodies to 42 percent. A dozen States, including Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and others had already crossed 50 percent reservation mark, he said in the Assembly on Monday, also appealing to the Congress government to announce a time frame to conduct gram panchayat, MPTC, ZPTC and municipal elections in the State.
The BRS government had conducted the gram panchayat elections in January 2019 soon after the Assembly elections that were held in December 2018. The term of gram panchayats ended in January 2024 and the terms of ZPTC, MPTCs ended in July 2024, he said, pointing out that In the absence of elected local bodies, the Finance Commission grants from the Centre were not being disbursed as it was mandatory to have elected local bodies to avail the funds.
He also demanded that the government table the caste census report in the House soon.
