Hyderabad: A patient and 14 visitors, including attenders, had a terrifying experience on Thursday when they were trapped in the lift cabin on the sixth floor of the Gandhi Hospital administration-cum-inpatient block.
Due to technical issues and overload, the lift did not work, resulting in the patient and others spending some tense moments before being rescued.
Panicked by the ordeal, the patient and visitors started screaming for help. It took nearly 30 minutes for the hospital staff and lift technicians to rescue them.
The rescue operations were successful with hospital staff and lift technicians managing to take-up repairs and restoring normalcy within hours. Similar incidents have happened on several occasions due to lift overload, senior doctors and staff familiar with such issues at Gandhi Hospital said.
In the past, they have seen several such instances of lifts suddenly malfunctioning. Since it is a tertiary hospital and receives patients from across Telangana, the passenger and patient lifts at Gandhi Hospital are always under severe stress due to heavy demand.
There are a total of three lifts for patients and two lifts for doctors, hospital staff and visitors at the admin-cum inpatient at Gandhi Hospital.
