Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is planning to introduce another 286 electric buses in the city in the first half of this year. Steps were being taken to have these buses on different routes that have good demand by May.
Presently, as many as 254 electric buses are running with an average occupancy of 80 per cent in the city.
The TGSRTC, which aims to run as many as 2,500 electric buses by reducing the number of diesel buses in phases, is taking steps towards a pollution-free public transport in the city.
Ranigunj EV charging station:
Earlier, it has been decided to start an EV charging point for the electric buses at the Ranigunj depot in the next three months and run about 100 electric buses from there.
Meanwhile, arrangements were being made to operate another 100 electric buses from the Kukatpally bus depot. While 55 electric buses are currently being operated from the Hayathnagar bus depot, a route map has been prepared to run another 45 electric Metro Express buses from the depot.
Transport officials say the electric buses were only cost effective but also reduce pollution.
While the operational cost for a diesel bus is about Rs 20 per km, an electric bus costs just Rs 8 per km. Apart from this, AC and Non-AC electric buses cover about 70,000 km, unlike the diesel buses which will save t he RTC a huge amount of money and also help cut the pollution in the city.
Total number of electric buses in Hyderabad:
AC buses – 90
City Ordinary buses – 74
Metro Express buses – 90
