Telangana: Nine Kasturba Gandhi students fall sick in Jagtial, given expired injections

While six students were shifted to the Jagtial hospital, three were provided treatment in the local primary health centre

Jagital: Nine students of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Sarangapur fell ill and were shifted to hospital for treatment. However, controversy erupted when parents of some of the students said the children were administered expired injections at the hospital.

Earlier in the day, six students were shifted to the Jagtial hospital and three were provided treatment in the local primary health centre. According to school authorities, the students complained about breathlessness and vertigo in the morning. They shifted six students to the Jagtial district hospital, from where they were shifted to Mother and Child Health Centre (MCHC). The students were discharged in the evening as their condition was stable. Meanwhile, three students, who were provided treatment in the local PHC, were discharged within one hour. Doctors said the students had developed respiratory problems due to cold weather conditions and that two of the girls were suffering from asthma.

On the other hand, parents alleged that the MCHC authorities had administered expired injections to the students. They showed the injection bottles with the expiry dates to BRS leader and former Zilla Parishad chairperson Dava Vasantha, who visited the students at the MCHC. Vasantha found fault with the MCHC authorities for administering expired medicines to students. Stating that the doctors were least bothered about the lives of students, she said there was no pharmacist in the hospital and also that the records were not maintained properly.
