Kavitha urges Govt to reconsider Rajiv Gandhi’s statue

Hyderabad: BRS MLC K Kavitha on Thursday urged the State government to reconsider its proposal to install the statue of former Prime Minister, the late Rajiv Gandhi, in front of the Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat, in the location designated for the statue of Telangana Talli by the previous BRS government. She stated that though she had utmost respect for the former Prime Minister for his contribution to the nation, replacing the Telangana Talli with his statue would be disrespectful to Telangana’s cultural identity.

Raising the issue in the Legislative Council, Kavitha reiterated that Telangana Talli was extremely important to the people of Telangana and installing her statue was a way to honour the State’s rich cultural heritage and pride. She urged the State government to prioritise installation of Telangana Talli’s statue in front of the Secretariat and respect the sentiments of people of Telangana.

“We have no objection to the State government’s proposal to change the features of Telangana Talli. Whether she has features of rich or poor, she will remain our Telangana Talli,” she asserted.

The BRS MLC also raised the issue of non-implementation of minimum support price (MSP) for groundnut farmers at Atchampet and Nagarkurnool agricultural marketyards.

She stated that despite fixed MSP of Rs.6,377 per quintal, middle men were purchasing groundnut crop from farmers at a lower rate of Rs.4,000-5,000 per quintal. She sought a discussion in the Council to eradicate the middle-men system at market yards and ensure just compensation to farmers for their hard work. She demanded that the State government provide them Rs.500 bonus per quintal as they were getting paid less than MSP.
