GURUGRAM: A woman working with a private bank was cheated of Rs 3 lakh by cyber-frauds who posed as her friend and sought money citing a medical emergency on Thursday.
The woman, a resident of Sector 43, said she received a WhatsApp call on Thursday from a number that had her friend’s photo as the display picture.
“The call was not clear, so I hung up. After a few minutes, I got a message that a tragedy had struck his family and he needed monetary help. Two different UPI IDs were sent to me and I was requested to send Rs 3 lakh. Since I did not have that much money, I asked my brother and sister to pitch in. The money was transferred in six transactions,” said the woman.
When the woman called her friend to ask if he had received the money, she was shocked to learn that he hadn’t requested for any monetary help.
“I realised that I had been cheated,” the woman mentioned in her complaint at Cyber Crime police station.
An FIR was registered against unknown persons under sections 419 (cheating by impersonation) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC on Thursday. “We have initiated an investigation. An attempt has been made to freeze the amount by informing the bank about the fraud,” said ASI Sandeep Kumar, the investigating officer.
